2018: Joint Letter – Submission to Lower the Federal Voting Age

Responding to the Lowering the Voting Age and Increasing Voter Participation Bill 2018 currently before the Federal Senate, YACWA joined with the Australian Youth Affairs Coalition and six other state youth peaks to express their firm support for young people’s right to vote.

This Bill provides young people aged 16 and 17 non-compulsory voting rights, and affirms their place in Australia as meaningful contributors to our society.

With the Australian Youth Affairs Council remaining defunded, young Australians currently have no enshrined national body to feed into decision making. We believe this is a unique opportunity to reshape Australia’s democracy in the 21st century, and to uphold young people’s human right to participation in the decisions that affect them.
